Three piece “Space Rock” alternative band from Dallas consisting of Brandon Curtis on vocals, bass and keyboards, Benjamin Curtis on guitar and backing vocals and Josh Garza on drums. Best described as progressive rock with some Krautrock mixed in, the band’s first full length release, “Now Here is Nowhere,” was recorded at Stratosphere Sound in NY and released May 18, 2004 on Reprise Records. Their second album, “Ten Silver Drops,” like their first, did not make an impact commercially but garnered many favorable reviews and reached #43 on the UK album charts and #159 on the US Billboard 200. It features Garth Hudson from the Band, playing accordion on “I Want To Know If It’s Still Possible.” In Pitchfork’s review of the album they said, “The latest from the Texas trio combines Krautrock precision with U2-size melodies.” Following the release, the band was interviewed by David Bowie on radio; purported to be a big fan. They have toured with the Foo Fighters, Spiritualized, Oasis, Kings of Leon, Interpol and many others. The band has reformed and is currently working on new material. Anyone interested in Pink Floyd, NEU, Ride, Spacemen 3, Mercury Rev, the Flaming Lips, U2, Super Furry Animals, Sparklehorse & Broken Social Scene should have this album in their collection.

Green on Red was an American rock band from Tucson, Arizona’s punk scene but based in Los Angeles for most of their career where they were loosely associated with the Paisley Underground scene. They were active between the years of 1979-1992 and then again reformed between the years of 2005-2006. They formed in 1979 as the Serfers, a four piece band made up of Dan Stuart (vocals/guitar), Van Christian (drums) and Sean Nagore (organ), who was replaced by Chris Cacavas. They relocated to LA in 1980 where they changed their name to Green on Red (after the title of one of their songs) to avoid confusion with the local surf punk scene. Christian was eventually replaced by Lydia Lunch sideman Alex MacNicol. The band issued a psychedelic self-released EP called Two Bibles. Their first EP was issued in 1982 on Steve Wynn’s (of Dream Syndicate) Down There label. Green on Red followed Dream Syndicate onto Slash Records, which released the album Gravity Talks in 1983. San Francisco-based guitarist, Chuck Prophet, joined the band for their 1985 album, Gas Food Lodging, released on Enigma. In 2006 Gas was performed live in its entirety as part of the All Tomorrow’s Parties-curated Don’t Look Back series. If voted to win, ROG will reissue Gas Food Lodging which has been out of print on wax since original release in 1985 in the US.

Better Than Ezra is an American alternative rock band from New Orleans. They formed in 1988 in Baton Rouge and the current band consists of Kevin Griffin (vocals and guitar), Tom Drummond (bass) and Michael Jerome (drums). The band has issued 8 studio albums from 1988 to present. They are best known for their 1993 platinum album, “Deluxe” and the single “Good” from 1995, which hit #1 on the Hot Modern Rocks Tracks charts. The four original members  - Griffin, Drummond, drummer Cary Bonnecaze and guitarist Joel Rundell formed when they all attended Louisiana State University. The band refuses to disclose the origin of its name although many theories continue to float around. The band circulated a demo tape in 1988 called the Chimes Street demo. While not official, the demo is sought after by fans and traded by collectors. In 1990 they released the cassette-only album, “Surprise.” Tragedy hit the band in 1990, when their lead guitarist, Joel Rundell committed suicide on August 8 of that year. The band took some time off but reunited as a three piece at the end of the year and played house parties and colleges across the South. They released their first nationally-distributed album, “Deluxe,” in 1993 on Swell Records which ended up helping to gain the attention of major labels and radio. The band signed with Elektra Records in 1995 and the label rereleased Deluxe in 1995 and the single, “Good,” reached #1 on the Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart which helped get the album to platinum status by the end of the year. Success came fast and furious. Tom Drummond was later quoted as saying, “It took us seven years to get signed and then seven weeks to get to #1.” After the success of “Deluxe,” drummer Cary Bonnecaze left and was replaced by Travis McNabb. Better Than Ezra released their second major label album, “Friction Baby,” in 1996 and the record produced the hits “Desperately Wanting,” and “King of New Orleans.” Although not as commercially successful as “Deluxe,” but as of 1999 has sold 500,000 copies. If voted to win, ROG will reissue and expand the original album to a 2LP set and include bonus live and unreleased tracks from the era.
