His style incorporates elements of rock, blues, soul, R&B, funk, jazz, reggae, hard rock, psychedelic, pop, folk and ballads. Kravitz won the Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance four years in a row from 1999 to 2002, breaking the record for most wins in that category by a male. He has been nominated for and won other awards, including American Music Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, Radio Music Awards, Brit Awards and Blockbuster Entertainment Awards. He was also ranked at No. 93 on VH1’s “100 Greatest Artists Of Hard Rock.” He was made an officer of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2001 and has acted in the Hunger Games film series. Kravitz’s 2000 Greatest Hits album released in 2000 proved to be his most successful album, reaching #2 on the Billboard 200 and selling nearly 11 million copies worldwide and becoming one of the most commercially successful albums of the decade. Kravitz’s “Black And White America,” originally titled Funk was released on August 22, 2011 in Europe and August 30 in the US. After the first two singles, “Come On Get It,” and “Stand” were released in February and June, it was announced that Kravitz would open for U2 on their 360 Tour on the second North American leg in 2010. In June of that year he agreed to guest star on an episode of Entourage on HBO. In 2011 he was honored with one of the highest cultural awards in France when he was made an officer of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French cultural minister. His success in France pre-dated his success in the US and he still enjoys great record sales in the country today.

    Biography

Louis XIV is an American rock band from San Diego, CA. Lead singer and guitarist Jason Hill, guitarist Brian Karscig and drummer Mark Maigaard formed the group in April 2003 while living in Paris. Bassist James Armbrust joined soon after. The band’s self-titled debut album was recorded soon after in a basement in the Spanish district in Paris on a 16-track tape machine. It was released in November 2003 through Pineapple Recording Group, a label started by Hill and Karscig. The album sold over 22,000 copies in the first six months of release, despite being only sold at shows, on the band’s website and in some independent record stores. The album became popular in the UK in 2004 after the band performed on the Jonathan Ross TV show one week after Oasis. The band also performed on the Mary Anne Hobbs show on BBC Radio 1. They were embraced by Distillers frontwoman Brody Dalle and Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme at the 2004 NME Awards. After the band returned to California, local radio stations began playing an unreleased song from the band’s website, “Finding Out True Love Is Blind.” This airplay led to the release of two simultaneous limited Eps. Eight major radio stations on the West Coast then named the single a top five song, leading the band to sign to Atlantic Records in late 2004. The band released a self-produced EP entitled Illegal Tender in January 2005, followed in March by their second full length album, “The Best Little Secrets Are Kept,” produced by Hill. The album spawned to singles, “Finding Out True Love Is Blind,” and “God Killed The Queen.” In 2005 NME called the band “music to flunk rehab to” and Rolling Stone and MTV named them as one of its top 10 bands to watch. In 2007 David Bowie and Alicia Keys asked the band to play their BlackBall charity event for Aids in Africa. Bowie cited Louis XIV as one of his favorite new bands in numerous Conde Naste publications. Hill and Karscig also sang on three songs on the Killers 2006 album, Sam’s Town. Louis XIV toured with the Killers between February and April 2009. The band confirmed that they were taking a hiatus on July 3, 2009 as Brian Karscig left the band and felt they “started to feel more like a business than a camaraderie and in that the music started to suffer and felt uninspired.” After performing a number of shows on their “Return of the King” tour in 2012 supporting The Killers, Jason Hill officially confirmed that the band decided to reunite.

    Biography

Warren William Zevon was an American rock singer-songwriter and musician. His most famous compositions include “Werewolves Of London,” “Lawyers, Guns and Money,” and “Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner,” all of which are featured on his third album, “Excitable Boy (1978)” whose title track is also well-known. He also wrote major hits for other artists, including “Poor Poor Pitiful Me,” “Accidentally Like A Martyr,” “Mohammed’s Radio,” “Carmelita,” and “Hasten Down The Wind.” Along with his own work, he recorded or performed occasional covers, including Allen Toussaint’s “A Certain Girl,” Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door,” Leonard Cohen’s “First We Take Manhattan,” Steve Winwood’s “Back In The High Life Again,” and Prince’s “Raspberry Beret.” Zevon’s early music industry successes were found as a session musician, jingle composer, songwriter, touring musician, musical coordinator and bandleader. Despite all this, he struggled to break through in his solo career, until his music was performed by Linda Ronstadt, beginning in 1976 with her album Hasten Down The Wind. This launched a cult following that lasted for 25 years, with Zevon making occasional returns to album and single charts until his death in 2003. He briefly found a new audience in the 1980s by teaming up with members of R.E.M. in the blues rock outfit, Hindu Love Gods. Known for his dry wit and acerbic lyrical content, he was a guest numerous times on Late Night with David Letterman and the Late Show with David Letterman. During the early 1970s, Zevon toured regularly with the Everly Brothers as a keyboard player, band leader and musical coordinator. By 1975 he returned to Los Angeles, where he roomed with Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, who had gained famed as members of Fleetwood Mac. There he collaborated with Jackson Browne, who produced and promoted Warren’s self-titled major label debut in 1976. Contributors to the album included Nicks, Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, members of the Eagles, Carl Wilson, Linda Ronstadt and Bonnie Raitt. Ronstadt elected to record many of his songs, including “Hasten Down The Wind,” “Carmelita,” “Poor Poor Pitiful Me,” and “Mohammed’s Radio.” Produced by Jackson Browne, his self-titled debut album (1976) was his first album to chart in the US, peaking at No. 189. In 1978 he released Excitable Boy (produced by Jackson Browne and guitarist Waddy Wachtel) to critical acclaim and popular success. Tracks from this album received heavy FM airplay and the single, “Werewolves Of London,” which featured Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, was a relatively lighthearted work featuring Zevon’s macabre outlook that reached No. 21 on the charts. Zevon followed Excitable Boy with “Bad Luck Streak In Dancing School” in 1980. Featuring a modest hit with the single, “A Certain Girl,” which reached No. 57 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, the album sold briskly but represented a decline rather in commercial consistency. It contained a collaboration with Bruce Springsteen on the song, “Jeannine Needs a Shooter,” and the ballad “Empty-Handed Heart” features a descant sung by Linda Ronstadt. Later in 1980, he released the live album, “Stand In The Fire,” which was dedicated to Martin Scorsese and was recorded over several nights at the Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles. It peaked at No. 80 on the Billboard Pop Albums chart in 1981. This residency featured the debut of two new original songs (“Stand In The Fire” and “The Sin”) and one new cover (“Bo Diddley’s A Gunslinger.”) Zevon has called the Roxy concerts “The Dog Ate The Part We Didn’t Like Tour.” If voted to win, ROG will reissue this classic live album as a deluxe 2LP set that features four tracks previously unavailable on vinyl and six tracks that are previously unreleased in any format.
