    Biography

Richard Steven Valenzuela, known professionally as Ritchie Valens, was an American singer, songwriter and guitarist. A rock n’ roll pioneer and a forefather of the Chicano rock movement, Valens’ recording career lasted only eight months and abruptly ended when he died in a plane crash at the age of 17. During this time, he had several hits, most notably “La Bamba,” which he had adapted from a Mexican folk song. Valens transformed the song into one with a rock rhythm and beat and it became a hit in 1958, making Valens a pioneer of the Spanish-speaking rock and roll movement. He also had the American #2 hit, “Donna.” On February 3, 1959, on what has become known as “The Day The Music Died,” Valens died in a plane crash in Iowa, an accident that also claimed the lives of fellow musicians Buddy Holly and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson. Valens was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 2001.

    Biography

Less Than Jake is an American ska punk band from Gainesville, Florida that formed in 1992. Band members include Chris DeMakes (vocals, guitar), Roger Lima (vocals, bass) Vinnie Fiorello (drums, lyrics), Buddy Schaub (trombone) and Peter “JR” Wasilewski (saxophone). The group released its debut album, “Pezcore,” in 1995, following a series of indie seven-inch single releases. Their subsequent two studio albums, “Losing Streak,” and “Hello Rockview,” were released on Capitol Records leading to increased exposure. Less Than Jake returned to major label status with its fifth studio album, “Anthem,” released in 2003 on Warner Bros./Sire Records. Debuting at #45 on the Billboard 200 (the band’s highest chart position to date), the album featured three major singles in both the US and the UK, with “She’s Gonna Break Soon” (which spent a few weeks on TRL), “The Science Of Selling Yourself Short” (which spent 5 weeks on the Billboard Top 40, peaking at #37), and “The Brightest Bulb Has Burned Out” (featuring Billy Bragg) which spent time in the UK Top 40. The band spent the rest of 2003 promoting the album by playing the Warped Tour and gained support from Fall Out Boy, Yellowcard, and Bang Tango during its fall 2003 tour. If voted to win, ROG will issue “Anthem” for the first time on full length vinyl.

    Biography

One of the most unique, original and important rock bands to burst onto the alternative scene in the 90s, Morphine was originally formed by vocalist/bassist Mark Sandman, saxophonist Dana Colley and drummer Jerome Deupree (later replaced by Billy Conway) in Cambridge, Mass in 1989. They expertly combined blues, jazz and rock elements into a very distinct style, anchored by Sandman’s deep, crooning, beat-style vocals. Rather than having an electric guitar as the focal point like most rock bands, the trio’s sound was built around Sandman’s two-string electric bass (often deployed with a slide) and Colley’s growling, baritone sax which was dubbed as “low-rock.” The band enjoyed critical acclaim but saw mixed results commercially. They did enjoy higher profile success overseas, especially in Belgium, Portugal France and Australia where they were featured on music television programming frequently and filled much larger venues. After five studio albums and extensive touring, Morphine disbanded after Mark tragically died of a heart attack performing on stage at the Giardini del Principe in Palestrina, Italy. Surviving members have soldiered on in various incarnations, the most recent being the Vapors of Morphine that will be on tour through the summer of 2017. “Good” was the first studio album recorded by Morphine and originally released September 8, 1992 on the Accurate label and then re-released by Rykodisc in 1993. Produced by Paul Q Kolderie, “Good” was recorded at Q Division Studio in Boston, Fort Apache Studio in Cambridge, MA, and the Outpost in Stoughton, MA. If voted to win, ROG will re-master from the original source tapes and expand to a 2LP set that would feature unreleased bonus tracks.
